Carnes-Miller Gear manufactures spur gears utilizing either the hobbing or shaping process. Part attributes contribute to the process selection. These attributes might include the location of the gear about other features, limited cutter clearance, or the face width of the gear. Machine tool work envelopes are also a factor to be considered. Oftentimes, it is not either or, but what is most cost-effective. CMG has practical experience in making this determination.
Spur Gear capabilities:
Carnes-Miller Gear specializes in the hobbing process to create high-quality helical gears up to 8” in diameter. We ensure precise outcomes by working closely with clients to define exact data and tolerances. Our capabilities extend to hobbing helical gears with features like crown hobbing and taper hobbing, and we can handle gear face lengths up to 300mm with helix angles up to +/- 45 degrees. Additionally, CMG can achieve an AGMA 2000 Class 10 rating on non-heat-treated gears and a Class 13 rating on heat-treated gears through advanced profile grinding that allows for various gear modifications. We also offer services for helical geared shafts, accommodating shaft sizes up to 100mm in diameter and 1000mm in length, and we excel in reverse engineering helical gears when OEM support is unavailable. For any inquiries or detailed needs in gear manufacturing, CMG invites you to reach out today.
Carnes-Miller Gear refers to worm gears as "worm wheels," which resemble spur gears with a throated diameter and can be up to 16 inches in diameter. The company utilizes a hobbing process for cutting teeth in worm wheels and typically uses materials like CDA 954 aluminum bronze and CDA 932 bronze, though steel is also an option. Worms, which are the mating profiles for worm wheels, are typically made from carburizing-grade steel, rough-machined, carburized, hardened, and then finished with ground. Carnes-Miller Gear also offers reverse engineering services to replicate worm gears and worms if a sample is provided.
Carnes-Miller Gear offers specialized services for manufacturing both internal and external splines. Carnes-Miller Gear utilizes hobbing and shaping techniques for external splines and broaching or shaping for internal splines, ensuring precision and fit. For quality assurance, CMG emphasizes the importance of proper gaging, particularly for involute splines, and offers solutions for small lot quantities and reverse-engineering scenarios. They maintain a comprehensive inventory of necessary tooling for producing external straight-sided splines, recommending gaging or mating part verification to ensure proper fit.
CMG has manufacturing experience for producing planetary gears, also known as epicyclic or sun and planet gears.

CMG has the capacity for Ring gears up to 10” pitch diameter; the Sun and Planet gears to mate Ring gears up to this size are well within our capacities. The limitation to the face width of these rings, gears and pinions is up to five inches.
